In-depth Bowflex Revolution Home Gym Review

In-depth Bowflex Revolution Home Gym Review. While other Bowflex machines provide resistance through the Power Rod system, the Revolution uses SpriaFlex resistance plates. If you are looking to pile on lean hard muscle this claims Bowflex is the best way!

The Revolution is designed as a top-level machine that is compact enough for home use, and yet provides a huge number of exercises. You might imagine a home gym to be big, bulky and heavy. However, the Bowflex is none of these and is incredibly compact perfect for home use.

SpiraFlhe Bowflex Revolution home gym includes over 100 exercises providing up to 400 different variations making your workouts literally limitless.

The Bowflex Revolution utilizes exercises for weight loss, performance training, strength building, heart rate training and recovery from injury. The technology was created to help astronauts at the International Space Station stay in shape, and now Bowflex has incorporated it into the Revolution. Using lightweight interlocking plates, SpiraFlex provides fluid reps and a great workout.

Bowflex Revolution Overview

The reason I have never bought a home gym is mainly due to the size. Bowflex wants to change this view, with an incredibly compact machine. Because of its size, we recommend using a mat system to protect the floor.

The Resistance – SpiraFlex Technology

The Bowflex Revolution introduces yet another unique resistance system.

The system is called SpiraFlex. It works by storing up resistance in lightweight plates fitted with springs. Each weight plate is incredibly light; the resistance comes from the unique way that it is equipped and twisted by the machine.

The Revolution comes with up to 220lbs of resistance, and it’s increasable to 300lbs. The increments are useful: 5, 10, 20 and 40lbs.

Space Age Technology.

Because of the way that the resistance is delivered, no weights are being moved up and down. Therefore, it’s perfect for use in space, where there’s no gravity. The same resistance system is used to condition Astronauts on the International Space Station.

SpiraFlex® vs. Selectorized resistance systems

The plates provide a level of resistance similar to conventional cast iron plates. But they do it at a fraction of the weight.

plates

For example, if you were looking to lift 80 lbs. of weight on a conventional weight tower, you would slide the locking pin into the plate stack at the 80-lb. mark. It would require 80 lbs. of weight plates. Alternatively, you can attach two of the 40-pound packs to the Bowflex Revolution to create the same resistance, but with each weighing just a few pounds.

It makes them a lot easier to move around, it reduces damage to flooring if dropped, saves on space, and results in a much quieter workout.

When you buy the machine, it provides you with 220 lbs. of resistance. It’s upgradable to 300 pounds by purchasing additional weight packs, in a similar way to enhancing the Power Rods on the PR home gyms.

To summarize, the SpiraFlex® resistance plate system is quieter, lighter, more compact, and can provide more resistance than similarly priced systems, such as the Body Solid G6B and BodyCraft Xpress Pro.

How does the Revolution work?

The Revolution has an incredibly intuitive system to use. At the heart of the machine is a comfortable padded seat, which is removable depending on the exercise.

At the base, you find the weights (SpiraFlex) and the arms that extend out from the compact storage space.

To set up the machine we would advise watching the enclosed DVD to familiarize yourself with the setup. While it’s by no means complicated, there are a considerable number of exercises that can be performed and it’s essential that its setup correctly.

The most prominent challenge with this home gym is the adjustments. With the arms adjusting to over ten positions depending on the workout it will take time before you can quickly move from one exercise to the next.

Furthermore, we like the variety of exercises the Revolution offers. They are expanded using different attachments that come as standard with the Revolution. For example, there is a squat harness, leg attachments for Curls, foot harness for thigh, glute and quad exercise.

Dimensions:

The Revolution measures just 5’5″ x 3’2″. To get around the machine, Bowflex advises 7′ x 5’4″. However, this is probably a little high.

If you do not need the optional Lat Tower, then the height is just 6’1″. However, this increases to 6’11” if you do use it.

Variety of Exercises

100+ exercises are supported. Here are a few of the most popular options below, categorized by muscle group.

Extra Accessories

If you are feeling flush, then you can upgrade your Bowflex. These can be added later as you master your machine. For example, there is a Weight Store, Ab Back Pad, and Lat Tower.

As your strength increases, you can also add more weights up to 300lbs

The Revolution comes with a standard 10-year warranty.

Set up

The gym arrives in 6 big boxes. It will take a few hours to set up unless you have a friend to help. All the instructions are clear and easy to follow.

The user manual for the Bowflex Revolution, it’s probably the most comprehensive we’ve seen, with sections explaining everything from the importance of goal definition through to the exercises you can perform on the Revolution.

There’s even a nutrition guide suggesting serving sizes and food choices for meals throughout the day as part of their complimentary Bowflex Body Weight Loss Guide.

Each page contains two exercises, providing you with a clear picture of the start and finish positions. The muscle groups worked, bench/motion and arm/accessory combination needed to perform the exercise most efficiently.

The assembly process comes with a separate manual and clear step-by-step instructions and diagrams. Allow several hours to get the equipment fully assembled.

Maintenance required

As with any piece of fitness equipment, there’s a basic level of ongoing maintenance.

Cons:

  • Assembly process takes longer than their PR1000 and PR3000 home gyms

  • Some reviewers would have liked the leg press plate positioned lower on the frame

Final Thoughts: Bowflex Revolution Home Gym Review

If a hard-lean body like you see in the ads is your goal, then the Bowflex Revolution is pretty much perfect for the job. The vast number of exercises will let you build routines that can target every muscle in your body and work it hard!

Overall, what you’re paying the extra money for is the increase in exercise options and more flexible cable pulley positioning. If you’re looking for sheer variety, then this is without a doubt Bowflex’s best machine.

  1. I don’t think this is as great as the other one I saw on this site. That and you say it’s not as great either so I don’t think I will be buying.

    1. Hi Tom, thanks for joining the discussion. You are right I didn’t rate the Bowflex Revolution as high as I rated some of the other fitness products I reviewed. However, it’s a versatile machine that has its own advantages such as its size and number of exercises you could perform. Thanks again, Robert

  2. There’s no need making excuses to stay fit with this versatile Bowflex Revolution. At home, this offers a complete workout package without going to a gym.

  3. The only gripe I have is the price. Well not really a gripe more so on a nitpick. As a comment said in the long run this can be a saver. That initial investment though is a bit steep.

  4. Interesting piece of equipment! I might recommend this to a friend since he loves these types of things. Thanks for the review!

  5. Although the price is high, the warranty and its size says it all. Furthermore, i like its built. My place is not that big, but this gym machine will definitely fit, and indeed goodbye to gym fees for now.

    1. Hello Sheila, thanks for joining the discussion. It’s a good long-term investment, it gives you a complete workout and it has a smaller footprint than a strength training gym. As a bonus, there’s no more gym membership fees. Thanks again, Robert

  6. Have read about the machine and what caught my eyes is the 10yr warranty. What!10? Though I would say it’s a good machine considering you can do 100+ exercises. About the price, I would say that’s the reason for the decade warranty. Not a bad machine overall.

    1. Hello David, thanks for sharing. This piece of equipment allows for 100+ different exercises as you noted. It’s easy and convenient to use plus it has an excellent warranty. It’s worth consideration if you want to stay fit and trim. Thanks again, Robert

  7. Perfect for the health buffs! Who needs to go to the gym when you can purchase this bowflex revolution? I guess I need to say goodbye to gym membership fees.
